Part One: Initial Consultation
When Nic decided that his old raised wooden deck wasn’t cutting it anymore, he planned to take his backyard space to the next level, with style.
He envisioned a grand entertainment and lounging spot, complete with custom areas for sunbathing, dining, and grilling.
To make it possible, he needed a solution that seamlessly integrated his unroom and the hot tub located between scattered mulched plant beds.
We grabbed our toolcase and came over to inspect the area, define the scope of work, and sort out all the details for the complex new deck structure.
Some of the challenges we faced...

Old deck removal
The old decking area had to be removed, together with the built-in deck planter and old siding.

Preparing the site
Multiple plant beds scattered around the area had to be removed, and the dirt excavated.

Sunroom integration
The sunroom bump-out was integrated using a complex two-level deck framing system with multiple stairways.

Hot tub handling
The hot tub required careful handling, custom framing, precise measurements and electrical work.

Custom storage area
An under-deck storage area was integrated below the existing sunroom, with a sliding barn door.
Part Two: The Design, Planning, Permitting
Given the custom integrations and areas, the deck plans and layouts required close attention and revisions to ensure everything was as Nic envisioned. We handled all permit work and inspections to obtain approval from the city’s building department.

The new deck would have two levels: one for the hot tub area and another for the dining zone. A multi-access stairway system (including two staircases leading to the yard and two secondary stairs near the bumpout) was integrated for proper circulation.

For the deck design, Azek French White Oak was to be used as the main decking material, while American Walnut would form picture-frame borders across the entire decking area, including the stair steps.

The main deck was covered by an additional rough-sawn cedar pergola. 8×8 and 16’x22′ posts and double 2x12x24′ beams were used for the buildout.

Additional structures like an 8.5’x3.5′ trash can enclosure and a 5’x5’x5′ AC enclosure were added to Nic’s property.
Part Three: The Time Schedule
Nic wanted every detail of his custom deck build to be perfect, so he took the time to analyze the project plans carefully before starting. We stepped in to make his dream deck area a reality, complete with all the additional custom details he requested.
May
Nic reached out to us and we sent him the initial proposal for the project after an on-site meeting.
Jun
Nic approved the proposal, and we came over to take the necessary measurements and polish the design plans for the new deck.
Aug
The building process kicked off with the removal of the old decking structure, plant beds, and dirt excavation to even out the terrain. The materials were delivered in the span of a week, and the deck build-out process started.
Sept
The new deck was complete, along with the pergola structure and finishing details for the under-deck storage space and hot tub area. The project was finished on Sept 19.

Carter did a great job on my mom’s deck. Showed up everyday as promised even though the weather was not good. Cleaned up and did great work. Very happy. Strongly recommend.

Carter’s crew, led by Blake, were polite and worked diligently. The deck is very well constructed and will last for many years. The deck will be stained in 2 months but it looks great as it is.

We hired Carter after we had a terrible experience with another contractor. His price was fair and the work was top notch. Will definitely use these guys in the future. Hands down, 10 out 10!
