Part One: Initial Consultation
When Kevin and Katie called Decks On Point, they knew their deck looked fine on paper. But in truth, it sat empty most of the year. The problem was simple: there was nowhere to hide from the weather.
The old deck was completely open, which meant blazing afternoon sun in the summer and a wet, unusable surface every time it rained. On top of that, the wood needed constant upkeep, and there wasn’t a single outlet or light to make evenings out there worthwhile.
What they really wanted was an outdoor room. A shaded, all-weather space they could actually enjoy, with power for lighting and a TV, and a natural flow down to the paver patio below.
Here's everything we found during the initial consultation...

No shade or shelter
The summer sun made it too hot to stay, and the rain shut it down completely.

High maintenance
The wood decking needed regular sanding, staining, and sealing to withstand Indiana weather.

No power or lighting
Once the sun went down, the space was dark and unusable. There was no way to run a TV, fan, or lights.

Aging structure
The deck needed a solid foundation and frame to fully support the porch cover.

Patio disconnect
The deck and the patio had to feel like one connected outdoor living area.
Part Two: The Design and Planning
Our team built detailed 3D renderings so Kevin and Katie could see exactly what the finished space would look like. From there, our design partner (Haugh Design Co.) drew engineered structural plans covering the foundation, decking, roof framing, and a seamless tie-in to the home’s existing roofline.
The full vision was brought to life before construction, showing exactly how the covered porch, composite deck, railings, and stairs would look and flow together.
The finished deck and railing are shown. It features a low-maintenance composite surface with a clean picture-frame border and the aluminum railing around the perimeter.
Part Three: The Time Schedule
Every project at Decks On Point follows a clear, step-by-step process, so homeowners always know what’s happening and what comes next. Here’s how Kevin and Katie’s build broke down.
Mar 31 – Apr 7
Proposal delivered, questions answered, and the contract signed to get the project underway.
Apr 16 – 21
Structural plans drafted and approved, with the 3D design finalized.
Apr 21 – May 14
Permit submitted and approved, materials ordered, 811 utility locate completed, and the crew scheduled.
May 25
Materials delivered, the old deck removed, footings excavated, and the foundation passed inspection.
May 25 – Jun 4
Framing, rough electrical, composite decking, and aluminum railing were all installed.
Jun 8 – 10
Final inspection, ceiling painting, punch-list items, power wash, final walkthrough, and warranty registration.
The on-site construction, from demolition to the final railing, took just 9 working days.
The Outdoor Transformation Is Complete
A wide-open deck that struggled against the weather is now a fully covered outdoor living room. Shaded, powered, and built for year-round enjoyment.

25' x 11' Covered Gable Porch
The centerpiece of the whole project. A vaulted tongue-and-groove pine ceiling, a ceiling fan, and recessed lighting turn a once-exposed deck into a true outdoor room. Shaded from the sun, protected from the rain, and built to be enjoyed every season.

TimberTech Advanced PVC Decking (Landmark Collection)
A premium composite floor with the rich, warm look of real walnut and almost no maintenance. No staining, no sealing, just a quick clean now and then. We finished it with a picture-frame border and hidden fasteners for a smooth, screw-free surface.

Westbury Tuscany Aluminum Railing
Powder-coated black aluminum railing with clean vertical balusters and crisp white posts. It’s rust-resistant, low-maintenance, and keeps sightlines open so nothing blocks the view.
